Daily Log: 6th April, 2017

I slept well, extensively actually – fot around 12 hours – that’s been the way of things during this crisis. I either sleep a lot or I don’t sleep at all.

I’ve changed my bedding today, showered, cleaned my teeth, dressed, aired the bedroom and dusted the bedroom furniture. I’ve folded some clean laundry, washed a few dishes and emptied the dishwasher.

read for a while, and I’ve played a few games of Mahjong. I haven’t played any computer games for years, but when an ad for a free version popped up on my tablet, I remembered that I had once loved playing Mahjong on some device or other. Within days I’d whipped through the 40-odd levels, finding it an outlet for my natural drive. I’ll admit I was disappointed not to receive onscreen fireworks or some sort of fanfare to mark the achievement :D! I’m still hoping to beat previous times but mostly now play because I find it mindful and therefore calming.

I’ve just shot about a foot in the air at the sound of my buzzer, I have a ridiculously exaggerated startle response. I pressed the button to open the street door without speaking into the intercom assuming it to be the early arrival of supermarket delivery of groceries that I’m expecting between 9-10pm. Delivery charges range from £7-£1; this slot is the cheapest.I haven’t eaten today so I’m looking forward to it arriving and having some supper. I thought my wait was over but with no sign of the delivery person nearly 10 minutes later, it looks like wishful thinking. I’ve stopped hovering by the front door, peering at intervals through the spyhole for signs of my shopping being lugged up the two flights of stairs to my flat.

The rest of the evening holds promise of further writing, making notes ahead of a planned meeting with my advocate tomorrow, and catching up with MasterChef before reading then sleep.

  1. I have never played Mahjong, but it seems to soothe you, so well done for getting all 40 levels.
I hope the meeting goes well.
(I’m now wondering who was at the door…)
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Hi Pete,
Mr Nobody is the answer! It was either someone who’d pressed the wrong buzzer, that happens regularly as the buttons are unhelpfully ordered on the door panel, or some miscreant playing knock-a-door run.
I’ll blog about the meeting with my advocate tomorrow, thanks for the good wishes.
Mahjong is about finding matching tiles in increasingly complicated configurations, which probably sounds riveting 😃.

  2. Funnily enough we’ve both had a similar mild upsurge. I finally dragged myself into the shower on Wednesday evening after a week and a half of advanced inertia. As much as I wanted to get myself clean, actually getting around to a routine task that used to be part and parcel of my day with barely a thought often feels like scaling a metaphorical rockface. Naturally I have a lot of sympathy with those who are similarly affected (certainly isn’t just thee and me). As disgusting as we find ourselves, we also know deep down that alone doesn’t make us bad people.
    After that I went out and did a supermarket shop, cooked a lasagne that was a couple of days past date in my fridge (̶I̶ ̶s̶a̶y̶ ̶c̶o̶o̶k̶e̶d̶,̶ ̶m̶o̶r̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶I̶ ̶t̶o̶o̶k̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶f̶i̶l̶m̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶t̶u̶f̶f̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶o̶v̶e̶n̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶h̶a̶l̶f̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶h̶o̶u̶r̶)̶, changed my bedding in between innings watching baseball via my laptop and finally got to sleep around 6am.
I set my phone alarm for 10am as I had to go to my doctor’s surgery a few minutes away for my annual diabetic retinopathy test (all went OK as far as we know) and was somewhat less than delighted when I managed to beat the alarm by a mere 2½ hours, Seven (expletive deleted) thirty. Ninety minutes sleep.
Although it’s fairly common for me to pull an allnighter, it’s happening more and more of late. I suspect that it’s down to my recent change of antidepressant. It’s been fairly good at lifting my mood but insomnia’s a fairly common side effect. I’ve got a telephone consultation booked with my GP for next Tuesday morning regarding my meds in general so I’ll bring it up with her then and seek her advice.
Bizarrely (in the context of your post) I also scaled the north face of my washing up which wasn’t a huge task but having contrived to run out of cutlery I took advantage of the prevailing wind (memo to self: open the windows on Friday).
As today was my best friend’s other half’s birthday, I spent the rest of the day with them having a long overdue catch up and lazy day catching the sun in the back garden which is probably as much daylight than I tend to see in any given fortnight these days. Much needed in lots of ways.
I do enjoy Mahjong! We had a set at home when I was a kid which sometimes saw the light of day and like Pete, my eyes were opened watching Chinese folk play whilst on a family holiday to Malaysia while I was in my teens. I’ve had fits and starts of playing it online as well as it’s something to pass the time and stretch the mind at the same time.
I suppose that I could have placed all this on my own blog which has been somewhat neglected of late, but I thought that our unwittingly shared experience over the last 24 hours or so was best suited as a reply. Makes a very nice change for the pair of us to have a simultaneous burst of activity! Hope your meeting with your advocate goes well and that you continue to make Heart-shaped strides in a forward direction xx

    • That was a meaty comment 😀, and very welcome. “I say cooked ..” that made me laugh. I’m just working on menu planning for the next few days, in the hope of eating regularly, healthily and using perishables in a timely fashion.
I’ve been trying to build on the success of keeping my therapy appointment yesterday, with a grocery delivery today (forcing a shower) and plans for a bath (it’s been planned before but hasn’t happened) tomorrow morning, then my advocate’s due to visitin the afternoon. All being well I’ve done enough work on myself to avoid being hijacked by terror and cancelling at the last minute.
I’m not sure if I’ve played Mahjong outside of a computer and unlike you two haven’t witnessed Chinese folk playing (Pete has a great blog by the way, well worth a follow. Yes a retired London paramedic, with a new life in rural (I’ve just this second realised the connection) Norfolk.
Chilling out with pals in the sunshine sounds lovely.
Battery about to expire. TTFN x
